The Soul Carers pictures are an inspiration from Sam’s mother.  The egg is a very ancient symbol of transformation. The red egg demonstrates the long traditions of soul care work. In ancient art the red egg is shown often with Mary Magdalene, who is one of our oldest cultural role models for soul caring. In our pictures we pass the red egg or eggs from hand to hand, person to person.

We took the photographs in a care home one afternoon. Everybody got involved, and we had lots of fun. The staff brought their children in. We took hundreds of pictures. We love the variety of hands, the old, young, tattooed, men, women, ‘working’ hands, moisturised hands, the nail art, and the little ones. Mostly we love the symbol of ordinary hands passing the symbol of soul care and transformation to each other.
